March 15th, 2023
Spend the afternoon in Cascade, Montana
It’s Mary Fields Day!
Mary Fields chose March 15th for her birthday. The Mary Fields Statue Committee will hold a fundraiser March 15th, 2023 to honor Mary. She was a prominent citizen of Cascade in the early 1900s. Born in Tennessee, growing up a slave, she found her way to Montana in 1884. She was the first African American mail route carrier in the United States. Her route was 17 miles from Cascade to St. Peters Mission in all kinds of weather. She was honored every year on her birthday by the closing of the Cascade school. The Cascade men’s baseball team chose her as their mascot.
The Statue Committee plans to recognize March 15th as Mary Fields Day in Cascade. A statue of Mary will require a large sum of money. This fundraiser, as well as grants and donations, will be put towards the statue. You can also send a donation to: Mary Fields Statue, PO Box 515, Cascade, MT 59421.
